Jo Haden Smith, owner of ZMSA, is a retired paper merchant and a part time (week-end) farmer. He needed to move water 50 meters upwards from a small furrow and a distance of 500 meters. Two broken Chinese 3kVa petrol generators later he decided that there had to be a better way!
ZMSA started as a direct result of requests from farmers to help solve their water pumping and electricity needs.
Farmers were searching for a power generator solution for their farms. The difficulties of electricity supply are becoming a reality for small farmers and the projection of electricity increases of 35% for the next 3-4 years really gave impetus to the addition of renewable energy solutions to the company’s range of products.
Internet research and a lot of interesting Brazilian-Portuguese mixed with some pigeon English finally led to the import of 2 test pumps, which, when installed, quickly led to a flood of enquiries from neighbouring farmers.
Several containers later, the water wheel pump is still the mainstay of the company’s product range.
ZMSA offers a range of Wind Turbines ranging in size from 1 kW to 50 kW. These are supplied as complete sets with towers, controllers and Inverters as vital equipment to take the full benefit of the wind in certain areas of the country.
The next key product range are the Micro Hydro Water Turbines, which are sourced from Vietnam. The PowerPal range of Low, Medium and High Turgo Turbines were chosen for its robust construction as well as its low cost. It is not generally known, but these famous blue turbines are responsible for nearly 50% of all electrical production in the mountains of Vietnam.
Deep Cycle AGM Batteries, initially sourced from China, soon proved to be the battery of choice for the wind and solar markets. Recent quality control legislation developments in China have pushed pricing out of reach of the market, but ZMSA have become a distributor for Deltec’s range of AGM batteries as well as the new, super high quality, lead crystal batteries from Deltec.
Solar Photovoltaic Panels, Initially sourced from Tenesol, Cape Town, until they stopped local production and now sourced from Solaire Direct have allowed ZMSA to enter the market for sun power. A very high quality product, allows us to meet customer needs without fear of quality backlash. ZMSA was also chosen to represent Ecoinnovation’s range of Micro Hydro Turbines from New Zealand. These almost fully recycled turbines offer amazing results, The turbine range goes from a Low Head Unit ( 1.5 – 4 m head), a Turgo Unit for heads between 5 m and 40 m and finally the PLT units when a and high head is available.
ZMSA has more than 300 installations across Africa, including South Africa, DRC, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola.
